Pug Not Eating
Every once in a while a pug might stop eating. There can be
many reasons for this. Many small breed dogs can be quite
finicky about eating. Complete anorexia lasting longer than 3
to 5 days requires some form of nutritional support.
Cause of Not Eating
First of all try to determine why your pug has stopped
eating. Is it because they can’t eat, or they won’t eat. Did
you recently change their diet?
It is important to examine the mouth to make sure there are
no tooth problems and there are no foreign bodies trapped in
the mouth.
Environment, stress, and pain can all play a part in a pug
not eating. Can you identify any thing like this that could be
the cause?
There are so many reasons why a dog may refuse to eat.
Sometimes it takes your veterinarian running several tests to
be able to figure it out.
Remember that if you are dealing with a pug that has on
again off again eating pattern to weigh them on a regular
basis. Long term anorexia results in weight loss.
This way if you do end up at the vet clinic you can say
precisely how much weight your pug has lost.
How To Get Your Pug To Eat
Warm some soft canned dog food in the
microwave. Warmed food has more aroma and thus increases
its palatability. (don’t burn your pug’s mouth!)
Try to feed some baby food. Baby food is
great way to tempt Pugs that are not eating.
Try freezing some chicken broth in the
shape of ice cubes and put them into the water bowl. Pugs
love to lick on these.
Appetite Stimulants
A vet might give medications to stimulate a pet’s appetite.
Diazepam and cyroheptadine can be used.
Surgical ways:
In cases of chronic anorexia a feeding tube might be placed.
Depending on how they are placed, these are called
nasoesophageal, esophagostomy, or gastrostomy.
If not eating is due to nausea a medication called
metoclopramide maybe given by your vet as well.
Summary
Remember that sometimes dogs can be finicky or they might
not just feel like eating today. Try to tempt your pug latter
in the day with some appetizing treats. Pugs that aren’t eating
often come around quickly.
