Pug Pregnancy
Help My Pug Is Pregnant!
An unexpected pug pregnancy can give a dog owner a lot of
stress. While having a well planned out dog pregnancy is
great it is not always possible. Here we go over
what to expect during a pug pregnancy.
Signs That Your Pug Is Pregnant
The signs that your pug is pregnancy are hard to tell
early on because they are very subtle. Even a
veterinarian could not tell by looking at the dog for the
first several weeks. It is not until the second half of
the pug pregnancy that you see signs.
Some signs that our pug is pregnant can include weight
gain, increased appetite, enlarging abdomen, sleeping
more, nesting behavior, enlarging mammary glands, and wanting
to be left alone.
Visit Your Vet
If you think your put is expecting any of these signs be
sure to see your veterinarian. They can tell you how far
along your pug is and about how many pups to expect with
an x-ray.
You should have your vet's emergency phone number
on hand during delivery in case there are problems.
Length Of A Pug Pregnancy
A pug pregnancy last for about 61 to 65 days, with an
average of 63 days. Normally pugs come into heat
about twice a year. Although the pug may bred
several times, pregnancy is counted started after the
first breeding, even though the dog may not get pregnant
until after the third breeding.
Signs Your Pug Will Give Birth Soon
Signs that your pug will give birth soon include, nesting
behavior, milk leaking from the nipples, restlessness, and a
body temperature drop to less than 100 degrees. This body
temperature drops happens within 24 hours of giving birth and
is a very reliable sign.
What To Do While Your Pug Gives
Birth
When your pug gives birth you need to be there to monitor
for problems. During birth you will see puppies and
placenta coming out. The placenta may form bubbles
of air or water, which is normal.
If your pug has been actively trying to give birth for
more than one hour call your veterinarian because something
could be wrong.
Pugs are prone to dystocia, which is difficulty giving birth
because pug puppies have large heads.
Preparing For A Pug
Pregnancy
If you have time to prepare for the pregnancy make sure you
get things like puppy milk replacer, heat sources, and puppy
nursing bottles.
Like I stated early be sure to have our vet's phone number
handy at all times as well.
